The Princess Bride begins in a Renaissance-era world, where the beautiful young woman Buttercup lives in the country of Florin. It is currently being developed as a stage musical by Disney, and has been licensed for card and tabletop gaming. The Princess Bride is best known as a popular 1987 film adaptation, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, and Mandy Patinkin. It has been reissued multiple times, with later editions containing additional content, including a sample chapter of a sequel titled Buttercup ’s Baby, although Goldman has since said the book may not be completed. Exploring themes of true love, the nature of marriage and family, the role of society and class, and the allure of revenge, The Princess Bride was wildly successful and is considered a modern classic of the fairy tale genre. The abridged format came about after Goldman’s attempt to write the story in a traditional style stalled. The book frequently contains asides and commentary ostensibly from Morgenstern, and was inspired by the fairytales Goldman told to his daughters. Morgenstern, it tells the story of the young woman Buttercup and her adventures, which include a flirtation with a handsome farmhand, a relationship with a scheming prince, and an encounter with a trio of comic outlaws.
